An Memorandum of Understanding was signed between District Development Committee, Darchula and Shree Mahendra Model Higher Secondary School, Khalanga, Darchula  and Indian Embassy for construction of school building for Shree Mahendra Model Higher Secondary School, Khalanga in Darchula District.

The project is being implemented by the District Development Committee, Darchula at a cost of NRs. 30.03 million. Government of India is providing assistance for construction of school building for Shree Mahendra Model Higher Secondary School, Khalanga in Darchula District in Nepal as a part of the India-Nepal Economic Cooperation Program.

According to a press release of Indian Embassy, the School was established in 1960 as a Lower Secondary School and subsequently upgraded to Higher Secondary level in 1993, Shree Mahendra Model Higher Secondary School, situated at Khalanga VDC, Ward No. 4 in Darchula District, far Western Development Region of Nepal, is one of the oldest government recognized school in the district. The existing infrastructure of the school building is dilapidated and is also insufficient to comfortably accommodate all the students. The total numbers of students of the school are over 1000, about 50% of whom are girls. The new infrastructure would provide much needed classroom space and would create an improved environment for learning and contribute to the development of the education in the area.

In addition to this project, work has already been completed for other 02 school projects at a cost of NRs.24.8 Million in Darchula District.  India has also provided 02 ambulances for use in District.

Recognizing the importance of accelerating growth in Nepal, India remains committed to rendering all possible assistance in that direction. The India – Nepal Economic Program has an outlay of over NRs.66 billion with more than 490 large and small development projects completed or currently being implemented in almost all the districts of Nepal. These development projects mainly in the sectors of education, health and infrastructure development have been undertaken in response to local needs, and in partnership with the Government of Nepal.
