The U.S. Mission in Nepal, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), today launched a new, 52-episode radio drama series called “Gaun Gaun ma Singha Durbar.”

The series, funded by USAID, will be developed by Search for Common Ground and broadcast across all 75 districts using local FM stations, aims to increase public awareness of how government works at local and national levels, demonstrate how government and citizen can collaborate, and illustrate multiple leadership styles for development and social initiatives.

The weeklong show will be aired between 6 to 8 pm, starting tomorrow, September 20, 2014, and will be released through popular community and commercial radio stations, such as Radio Sagarmatha in Kathmandu, Dinesh FM in Kailali, Synergy FM in Chitwan, and Baglung FM in Baglung.

Speaking at the launch today, U.S. Ambassador Peter Bodde stated: “This program aims not just to entertain but to help citizens across Nepal understand the role and function of government.  We’ve seen in the United States and around the world the huge influence that popular media can have on public opinion and understanding.”  The radio drama, part of USAID’s two-year, $1 million media program for good governance, will later be followed by a TV series. Producers hope the series will foster constructive interaction between citizens and government.

"The radio drama will include interviews with local Government officials and letters from listeners, and will be accompanied by outreach activities like interactive listening sessions and dialogues.  This will provide a platform for listeners to digest the fun and addictive story lines, as well as to discuss the deeper issues facing their communities," said press release issued by Public Affairs Section Embassy of The United States.
