Unified CPN-Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal and office-bearers of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) have held a meeting.

In the meeting that took place at Dahal's residence in Lazimpat, the UCPN-Maoist Chairman is learnt to have urged the TRC to take initiatives towards addressing the situation following the latest decision of the Supreme Court regarding the jurisdiction of the Commission. Dahal reportedly told the TRC team that the court decision will push the country towards a conflict again. He argued that the cases related to the conflict period should fall under the Commission's jurisdiction.

Dahal said that although some points mentioned in the latest decision of the Supreme Court are acceptable, all points of the verdict are not.

Although there is a provision in the Comprehensive Peace Accord signed between the then government and the rebel CPN-Maoist stipulating that the TRC will look into all the issues related to the conflict period, this has been overturned by the Supreme Court's latest decision, Dahal expressed his displeasure with the TRC officials.

The Supreme Court, on February 26, had stated that the TRC could not look into the incidents related to the conflict period which are under consideration of the courts and neither could grant general amnesty.

The TRC officials, in the discussion, stated that they will move ahead based on the provisions stipulated in the TRC Act and the consensus of political parties.

They said they could not do anything regarding amending the Act and suggested Dahal to discuss this matter amongst the parties themselves, Dahal's aide Shiva Khakurel said.

The UCPN-Maoist and the CPN-Maoist on Tuesday issued a joint press release expressing their objection to the Supreme Court's recent verdict citing it was against the letter and spirit of the Peace Accord.
