Along with rescue operations, clean drinking water is essential for the population affected by the Great Earthquake in Nepal. Keeping this in mind, the French Government sent a specialized team from the French Interior Ministry to install a water treatment/purification plant for the local residents of the affected areas.

According to a press release issued by French Embassy, 34 water treatment specialists from the General Directorate for Civil Protection (French Interior Ministry) have installed a drinking water purification/treatment plant at the ground of the Alliance Française de Katmandou (AFK) in Teku. 

This plant will produce clean drinking water with a maximum capacity of 200,000 liters of drinking water per day.  Water for the treatment will be provided by Kathmandu Upatyaka Khanepani Limited  (KUKL) and the local residents.

This drinking water will be distributed to the residents of Teku, Tripureshore,  Khokana, Saankhu etc by trucks.  More areas of intervention will be identified in the days to come.  Local residents may come directly to the AFK with their containers and collect drinking water.  Drinking water will also be given to KUKL for distribution to the affected areas.

The inauguration of this plant was performed in the presence of Mrs. Martine Bassereau , French Ambassador to Nepal, Sanjeev Bikram Rana, Executive Director of Kathmandu Valley Water Supply Board, Chandra Lal Nakarmi, General Manager of KUKL, and other representatives of the local consumer group.
