Perhaps Congress-I had not reasoned enough how self-suicidal the design was. As an implementation of the design, it imposed 18 months of embargo on Nepal in 1989-90. Its downfall started then. Indians were not happy with the ban. The brotherly people of India’s northern border side –as they descended from the same origin –helped Nepalis with salt and fuel supplied by hiding the goods in their bags.

Nepal has gone through a major political transformation since the peace agreement with Maoists a decade ago, abolishing old governance system and institutions and promulgating the new constitution. From politics of inclusion to dismantling of the centralised system to give autonomous power to local levels within the parameter of federalism, Nepal’s march ahead continues.
