Along with rapid urbanisation, growing markets and waste management practices, countries have faced challenges from plastics both in land and water. Of the 8.3 billion metric tonnes of plastic produced globally over the past decade, only 9% is estimated recycled and 79% accumulates in landfills. Use of plastic bags was estimated at one million per minute in 2011.

Air pollution is one of the most severe health problems facing Kathmandu. According to a global Environmental Performance Index published earlier this year, Nepal has the lowest air quality of the 180 countries ranked. Kathmandu is a large reason for that. Last year, using data from the World Health Organization and other institutions, Numbeo.com ranked the city as the fifth most air polluted in the world, with a pollution index of 96.57.

Plastics became a popular item of use from 1950 onwards. I recently saw a clip in Facebook about plastics which I dutifully shared hoping to create some awareness about what we are dealing with. This knowledge, courtesy the Science Advance Journal states that there is currently about 8.3 billion tons of plastic existing in the world.
